emPower Hour is a radio show produced by WPFW 89.3 FM in Washington DC. Hosted by DeShuna Spencer, founder/publisher of emPower magazine, the weekly program is an interactive, fast-paced social justice program that tackles issues facing her community, highlights individuals in the DC metropolitan area who are impacting their communities, and actively discusses solutions that listeners can do to make a difference.
During each episode, DeShuna engages experts, authors, filmmakers, artists, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, scholars and/or journalists from various backgrounds and expertise in a lively discussion on one social topic and wraps up the dialogue with takeaways called “What You Can Do” that include ways viewers can get involved in the issue discussed. Each week, DeShuna talks to a “Grassroots Giver,” someone who’s positively changing their communities—whether it’s a non-profit organization that combats HIV in Southeast or a teenager who spends time after school visiting the elderly in Prince George’s County. emPower Hour aims to seek solutions and celebrate local heroes.
emPower Hour occurs every Thursday at 2 pm EST. Visit WPFW to Listen Live. If you have a show idea or know a Grassroots Giver we should feature, email: empowerhour [at] empowernewsmag [ dot] com.
